Study Here
A warm welcome to all sincere seekers of Brahma Vidya.
Come to Uttarkashi to study Advaita Vedanta in the Guru–śiṣya tradition, spend time in svādhyāya and contemplation, and discover the quiet rhythm of life in the Himalayas, with Mother Ganga flowing nearby.
If you would like to study here, we warmly invite you to get in touch with the Vidyapeeth and speak with the Acharyas about your visit.

Let the study become part of your life
Established as Somashram in 1910, Adi Shankara Brahmavidya Peeth follows the Advaita Vedanta tradition of Bhagavatpada Adi Shankaracharya. The study includes the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Brahma Sutra with Shankara Bhashya, along with Vedanta prakaraṇa texts, Darśana Śāstras and Sanskrit.
Students are encouraged to approach the teachings with sincerity, patience and a willingness to listen, reflect and enquire. The aim is not simply to collect information, but to deepen understanding through sustained study and contemplation.
Study shaped around sincere enquiry
Students of different age groups are currently studying at the ashram. The emphasis is on spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of the śāstras, rather than on gaining certificates.
Flexible study
There is a guided structure to the study, while the classes a student attends can be discussed with the senior Āchāryas in light of their interests, background and prior study. This allows each student to find a suitable way into the teachings.
Daily study sessions
There are usually four or five one-hour study sessions each day: three in the morning and up to two in the afternoon. The classes a student attends can be discussed with the senior Āchāryas, so the study can suit their background and interests.
Evening prayers
Alongside the study sessions, the daily rhythm includes evening prayer routines. These offer time to come together in prayer and keep spiritual practice woven into everyday life.
Occasional programmes
The ashram also holds occasional programmes, including week-long Bhāṣya Pārāyaṇa programmes, generally organised once a year.
Saraswati Mandir Library
Saraswati Mandir at Somashram houses a large collection of Vedic literature, offering students a valuable resource for reading, reference and deeper study. Books needed for study are provided by the library. Students may also choose to purchase their own copies for personal use.
Learning across age groups
People from various age groups study at the ashram. The shared focus is sincere enquiry, reflection and spiritual upliftment through the traditional study of Vedānta.
Accommodation for your time of study
We warmly welcome you to enquire about staying in Uttarkashi while you study. Please feel free to speak with the ashram about the residential arrangements available.
Those coming to study are welcome to enquire about staying at the ashram. Somashram, the original ashram, is generally home to those who have received dīkṣā and stay within that established setting, while Shankaranya is the newer centre, with greater residential capacity and several participants already living there. Rooms in the newer accommodation include a small kitchenette and an attached toilet and bathroom.
Women are also part of the wider life of the ashram. Although women participants generally stay in nearby accommodation, they are welcome to participate in the ashram’s activities. When it is not convenient to come to the ashram for the afternoon class, they can usually join online. The ashram can offer general guidance about finding nearby accommodation. Several Sannyāsinī Mātas and sādhikās currently live in and around Uttarkashi. Sādhikās are also welcome to discuss with the ashram whether bhikṣā can be arranged.
Simple living, supported by community
Life in Uttarkashi can be quiet and uncomplicated, while still offering the basic facilities needed for a period of study.
Bhikṣā and meals
Meals are part of daily life at the ashram, and resident participants are generally provided lunch and dinner. If you are staying nearby, you can also ask the ashram about the possibility of taking bhikṣā there. You are welcome to discuss meal timings and possible arrangements with the ashram when you get in touch.
Everyday necessities
Uttarkashi is a small Himalayan town with local markets for everyday essentials. Online shopping services also reach many parts of the area, though delivery can take a little longer than in larger cities.
A living spiritual community
Uttarkashi is home to many ashrams, temples, sādhus and sannyāsīs. Its wider spiritual community offers many opportunities to listen, learn and experience the quiet, living traditions of this sacred town.
Temples and Mother Ganga
The revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple is in Uttarkashi, and the presence of Mother Ganga is part of the town’s distinctive spiritual atmosphere. The surrounding Himalayan landscape invites simplicity, prayer, study and quiet reflection.
